History

Hídépítő is one of the oldest construction companies of Hungary; its history dates back over 140 years. One of its predecessors is Zsigmondy Béla Rt., whose name is entwined with the history of national well-drilling and bridge construction of the late 19th, early 20th century.

Zsigmondy Rt. has participated in all the significant construction works throughout the area of Hungary pre 1921. Most of the thermal baths of Budapest are sited on the wells drilled by the Zsigmondys. They drilled the artesian well of the Városliget, the thermal well on Margitsziget (Margaret island) and numerous thermal wells on the Hungarian Great Plain. Other commissions include the Szabadság bridge, the Erzsébet bridge, the bridge of Boráros square, the Rába bridge in Győr, the Polgár Tisza bridge as well as the Árpád bridge.

Zsigmondy Rt. was a member of the Danube Bridges Work Community founded after World War II. However, the nationalization brought an end to its independence, and it went through several name changes and mergers with other companies. After repeated modifications it functioned under the name of Hídépítő Vállalat (Bridge Building Company) from 1950 until it was turned into a corporation.

Hídépítő Vállalat became a significant member of the Hungarian construction industry. It participated in the reconstruction of bombed bridges, in every major bridge, road and civil engineering work, as well as in works on industrial plants and the underground construction. Several new technologies were patented or first used by them in Hungary. The creation of Hídépítő Részvénytársaság in 1993 was in line with the transformation processes of the Hungarian economy. Hídépítő Rt. was founded on the 1st of June, 1993. The profile of the privatized, transformed and reconstructed Hídépítő expanded. Besides the building and renovation of river, road and railway bridges, it took on the construction of power plants and industrial plants, communal and environmental investments, water and sewage treatment plants, sewers, landfills and gas pipeline constructions. Then an internationally renowned group became its majority shareholder.

2008 was a year of changes. The major shift in the life of the company was the change in the ownership: it became 100% Hungarian owned once again. At the same time, the rationalization of activities was initiated, and the A-HÍD Építő Zrt. was founded.
The engineering activities and the real estate management were separated into different companies under the names G-HÍD Zrt. and I-HÍD Zrt.
K-HÍD Kft., specialized in the financial, accounting and administration activities, started its work in January 2009.
